The Myth of Euarne

Euarne appears in Hesiod's catalogue of Nereids, and her name combines eu (good) with arnos (lamb).‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍ This pastoral name for a sea nymph may seem surprising, but it reflects the deep connection between coastal life and animal husbandry in ancient Greece. Coastal pastures, fed by sea mists and mild maritime climates, were excellent for raising sheep, and the wool trade was a major component of Mediterranean commerce. Euarne personified the prosperity that the sea brought to coastal shepherds — the mild climate, the trade routes for wool, and the seaweed that was sometimes used as animal fodder. She bridges the world of the shepherd and the world of the sailor.
