Limnoreia
Nereid sea nymph whose name means "she of the salt marsh," associated with the brackish coastal waters where fresh and salt water meet
The Myth of Limnoreia
Limnoreia was listed among Hesiod's Nereids, and her name combines limne (lake, marsh, lagoon) with a suffix suggesting guardianship. She personified the coastal lagoons and salt marshes where the sea's domain blurred into the land — brackish, tidal, teeming with life. These coastal wetlands were enormously productive environments, rich in fish, shellfish, and waterfowl, and they played a vital role in ancient economies. Limnoreia guarded these transitional waters. Salt marshes were also important for salt production — one of the most valuable commodities in the ancient world. She represents the sea at its most ecologically productive, where marine and terrestrial ecosystems overlap and create extraordinary biodiversity.
