The Legend of Democoon

Democoon was an illegitimate son of King Priam of Troy who lived in the city of Abydos on the Hellespont, where he tended his father's swift mares.‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌ When war came, Democoon left his pastoral duties and travelled to Troy to fight alongside his father and half-brothers. He joined the battle eagerly, but his time on the field was short. During the fighting that followed Pandarus's treacherous arrow shot at Menelaus, Odysseus was filled with rage and sought revenge. He hurled his spear at Democoon, striking him through the temple. The weapon passed clean through his skull and he fell with a crash. Democoon was one of the first casualties of the renewed fighting and his death spurred the Greeks forward.
