Orithyia
Nereid sea nymph whose name means "she who rages on the mountain," associated with storm-driven seas
The Myth of Orithyia
Orithyia appears in Hesiod's catalogue of Nereids, though her name is more famously associated with the Athenian princess abducted by Boreas, the North Wind. The Nereid Orithyia represents the connection between mountain winds and sea storms — when cold air rushes down from the mountains and whips the sea into fury. Her name combines oros (mountain) with thyein (to rage), capturing that moment when land weather becomes sea weather. For Greek sailors, the most dangerous winds were those that funnelled through mountain passes and struck the sea with unexpected violence. The Nereid Orithyia personified this particular terror of the sea stirred by mountain gales.
