The Myth of Pontoporeia

Pontoporeia was listed among Hesiod's Nereids, and her name combines pontos (sea, especially the open deep sea) with poreia (crossing, journeying).‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌ She was the divine personification of the sea voyage itself — not the departure or the arrival, but the crossing, the time spent upon the open water with nothing but sky above and abyss below. For the Greeks, crossing the open sea (as opposed to coastal hopping) was a terrifying and exhilarating experience. Pontoporeia represented both the danger and the achievement of the open-water crossing. The word pontos specifically meant the deep open sea rather than the coastal waters, making her a nymph of the abyss rather than the shallows.
