The Legend of Phocus

Phocus was the son of the hero-king Aeacus and the sea-nymph Psamathe, who had transformed herself into a seal to escape Aeacus's pursuit, giving Phocus his name, which means seal.‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌ He was a gifted athlete who excelled in all forms of competition. However, his prowess earned him the jealousy of his half-brothers Peleus and Telamon, sons of Aeacus by his mortal wife Endeis. During an athletic contest, Telamon hurled a stone discus that struck Phocus in the head, killing him. Some sources say this was deliberately planned by both brothers, while others call it an accident. Aeacus discovered the truth and banished both Peleus and Telamon from Aegina. This exile ultimately led Peleus to Phthia, where he fathered Achilles, and Telamon to Salamis, where he fathered Ajax.
