Aegeus

King of Athens and father of Theseus who threw himself into the sea when he saw black sails, believi‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌ng his son was dead.

The Legend of Aegeus

He jumped from a cliff because of a forgotten sail change — and named a sea.‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌ Aegeus told Theseus to hoist white sails if he survived the Minotaur, black if he died. Theseus killed the Minotaur but forgot to change the sails (distracted by grief at abandoning Ariadne, or simply careless). Aegeus, watching from the cliffs of Sounion, saw the black sails and leaped into the sea. The sea became the Aegean. It is one of myth's most devastating moments of negligence — a hero's carelessness kills his own father. Before Theseus, Aegeus had left his sword and sandals under a rock for his unborn son to retrieve when strong enough — the recognition tokens that proved Theseus's identity.
