The Myth of Leagore

Leagore appears in Hesiod's catalogue of Nereids, and her name combines laos (people) with agora (assembly, gathering place).‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌ She personified the sea's role as a unifying force — bringing people together for trade, colonisation, and cultural exchange. The agora was the civic heart of every Greek city, and the sea served as the great agora of the entire Greek world, a meeting place where different peoples and ideas converged. Leagore embodied this connective function. Greek colonies spread across the Mediterranean precisely because the sea brought people together rather than keeping them apart. She represented the social and communal aspect of maritime life.
