Euagore
Nereid sea nymph whose name means "she of good speech in the assembly," associated with eloquence and persuasion
The Myth of Euagore
Euagore was one of Hesiod's fifty Nereids, and her name combines eu (good) with agora (assembly, public speaking). She was "she who speaks well in the assembly," personifying eloquence and effective communication. The connection to the sea may seem unexpected, but the agora and the harbour were closely linked in Greek city life — commercial ports were places of negotiation, persuasion, and deal-making. The sea brought merchants who needed to be persuasive and diplomats who needed eloquence. Euagore may also reflect a more abstract idea: the Nereids as daughters of wise Nereus carried his qualities of truth and good counsel, and good speech was an extension of truthfulness.
