The Myth of Hipponoe

Hipponoe was one of Hesiod's fifty Nereids, and her name combines hippos (horse) with noos (mind), m‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌eaning "horse-minded" or "swift of thought." The connection between horses and the sea was deep in Greek mythology — Poseidon was god of both, and waves were poetically called "horses" because of their manes of foam and their galloping approach to shore. Hipponoe personified the swift, darting intelligence attributed to the sea — the way water seems to think as it finds its path around obstacles, the way currents shift with apparent purpose. Horses represented the pinnacle of speed in the ancient world, and combining their swiftness with the quality of mind created a powerful image.
