Calydonian Boar

The Calydonian Boar was a massive, destructive beast sent by Artemis to ravage Calydon after King Oeneus forgot to honour her in sacrifice.
The Myth of Calydonian Boar
The Calydonian Boar was sent by Artemis to ravage the kingdom of Calydon after King Oeneus forgot to include her in his harvest sacrifices to the gods. The monstrous beast destroyed crops, killed livestock and men, and terrorised the countryside. Prince Meleager assembled the greatest heroes in Greece for the hunt: Theseus from Athens, the Dioscuri from Sparta, Peleus (father of Achilles), Telamon (father of Ajax), Jason, and the huntress Atalanta. It was Atalanta who drew first blood, and Meleager who delivered the killing blow. He awarded the hide to Atalanta, sparking a fatal quarrel with his uncles that led to his own death — a tragedy that echoed the wrath of the gods across Olympus.
