The Meaning of Calydonian Boar Hunt

The Calydonian Boar Hunt was one of the largest heroic assemblies in Greek mythology, rivalling the voyage of the Argo and the Trojan War in the number of famous participants.‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍ Artemis sent the monstrous boar to ravage the lands of Calydon after King Oeneus neglected to include her in his harvest sacrifices to the gods. The boar was of supernatural size and ferocity — it uprooted vineyards, destroyed crops, killed livestock, and drove the people behind their city walls. Prince Meleager sent word throughout Greece, and a remarkable company gathered: Castor and Pollux, Theseus, Telamon and Peleus (fathers of Ajax and Achilles), Jason, Iphicles, Pirithous, and the huntress Atalanta, among many others. The hunt was chaotic and deadly. Several heroes were killed or wounded by the boar before any could harm it. The centaurs Hylaeus and Rhaecus attempted to assault Atalanta and she killed them with her arrows. Ancaeus charged the boar with an axe and was gored to death. Atalanta finally wounded the boar with an arrow, slowing it enough for Meleager to close and deliver the mortal blow. The aftermath proved more destructive than the hunt itself: Meleager's decision to award the prize to Atalanta ignited a quarrel that led to the deaths of his uncles by his own hand, his own death through his mother's burning of the fateful log, and the suicides of both Althaea and Meleager's wife Cleopatra. The hunt demonstrated a recurring pattern in Greek myth: assembling heroes creates glory but also generates conflicts that destroy the very community the heroes sought to protect.
