Language and meteorology

An English word meaning a gentle, mild breeze, derived from Zephyrus, the Greek god of the west wind‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍ who represented the mildest and most pleasant of the four directional winds

The Meaning of Zephyr

The word "zephyr" derives from Zephyrus, the Greek god of the west wind.‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍ In the Greek system of winds, each of the four cardinal directions had its own divine personification: Boreas (north), Notus (south), Eurus (east), and Zephyrus (west). Zephyrus was considered the gentlest and most benevolent of the wind gods, associated with spring and the renewal of vegetation. In myth, Zephyrus was the lover of the goddess Chloris (Flora in Roman tradition), and his warm breath caused flowers to bloom. He also appears in the tragic story of Hyacinthus: jealous that the beautiful youth preferred Apollo, Zephyrus blew Apollo's discus off course, killing Hyacinthus. Despite this violent episode, Zephyrus was primarily associated with gentle warmth and fertility. The word "zephyr" entered English in the fourteenth century and is used to describe any soft, mild breeze. It appears in poetry, weather descriptions, and has been adopted as a brand name for lightweight fabrics, ventilation systems, and vehicles — anything that evokes gentle airflow. The Ford Zephyr and the Zephyr railway train both drew on this classical association.
