The Myth of Argestes

Argestes was the divine personification of a wind from the west-northwest direction in the expanded Greek wind system.‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌ His name means the clearing one or the brightening one, derived from the Greek word argos meaning bright or white, and he was associated with the phenomenon of skies clearing after a storm as the wind shifted to the west-northwest. In the twelve-wind compass used by some ancient meteorologists, Argestes occupied a position between the due west wind Zephyrus and the northwest wind Skiron. His was considered a generally favourable wind that swept away rain clouds and brought clear, bright conditions. The agricultural and maritime communities of Greece paid careful attention to these subtle wind distinctions, as the difference between a west wind and a west-northwest wind could mean the difference between a safe harbour approach and a shipwreck on coastal rocks.
