Jovial

💭 conceptΔιόσημος
Cheerfulness, good humour, warmth

Cheerful and good-humoured, from Jove (Jupiter/Zeus), whose planet was thought to bring happiness.‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍

The Meaning of Jovial

Jupiter, the Roman name for Zeus, was king of the gods and ruler of the sky.‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍ In medieval and Renaissance astrology, the planet Jupiter was considered the most beneficial celestial body. People born under Jupiter's influence — "jovial" people, from Jovis, the Latin genitive of Jupiter — were thought to be cheerful, generous, warm, and sociable. This astrological belief was so widespread that "jovial" entered everyday English by the late sixteenth century, losing its astrological specificity and coming to mean simply good-humoured and convivial. The underlying mythology supports this: Zeus, despite his thunderbolts, was frequently depicted at feasts, laughing with the other gods, enjoying wine and company. He was the host of Olympus, the convener of divine banquets, and the guarantor of hospitality. The word preserves a vision of the sky god not as a stern patriarch but as a generous, warm-hearted ruler who enjoyed life.

Fun Fact

Astrologers considered Jupiter the "Greater Benefic" — the single most fortunate influence in a birth chart — which is why jovial means happy rather than powerful.
