The Myth of Aparctias

Aparctias was the divine personification of the true north wind in some Greek wind classification sy‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌stems, sometimes distinguished from Boreas, who was associated with the northeast or the violent northern gale. His name derives from arktos, the bear, referring to the constellation Ursa Major that marked true north in the Greek sky. While Boreas was characterised as a wild and violent deity who snatched away mortals and brought fierce winter storms, Aparctias could represent the steadier, calmer cold wind from due north. In the expanded twelve-wind system described by some ancient meteorologists, Aparctias occupied the true north position while Boreas shifted to the north-northeast. This distinction mattered greatly to sailors, for whom the precise direction of the wind determined whether a voyage was possible or suicidal. Aparctias represents the Greek drive to systematise natural phenomena with divine precision.
