The Myth of Thallo

Thallo was one of the two or three original Horae, the goddesses of the seasons, as worshipped in Attica.‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌ Her name derives from the Greek word thallein, meaning to bloom or to flourish, and she personified the season of spring and the budding of new plant growth. In Athens, the Horae were worshipped as a pair or triad alongside Carpo and sometimes Auxo. Thallo was particularly important in Athenian civic religion: newly enrolled ephebes, the young citizen-soldiers, swore their military oath partly by the name of Thallo, invoking the goddess of growth as a witness to their entry into manhood. She was associated not only with the literal flowering of plants but with the metaphorical blossoming of young people into full citizenship. Pausanias records that she had a cult presence on the Acropolis, connected to the broader worship of agricultural and seasonal deities.
