The Myth of Proserpina

Proserpina's myth was central to Roman understanding of the seasons.‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌ Abducted by Pluto while gathering flowers, she was taken to the underworld, and her mother Ceres caused all crops to wither in grief. Jupiter negotiated a compromise: Proserpina would spend part of the year below with Pluto and part above with her mother. When she returned, spring came; when she descended, winter followed. This myth took on particular significance in Roman mystery cults, where Proserpina's annual return symbolised the hope of life after death. Her cult at Locri in southern Italy was especially important, and curse tablets frequently invoked her name alongside Pluto's to bind enemies.
