Demeter

godGrainΔημήτηρ
Goddess of harvest and the Eleusinian Mysteries

Demeter was the goddess of grain, harvest, and fertility whose grief over Persephone's abduction exp‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍lained the seasons and whose Mysteries promised hope beyond death.

The Myth of Demeter

When Hades abducted Persephone and took her to the underworld, Demeter withdrew her gifts from the earth.‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍ Crops withered across Greece, famine spread, and humanity faced extinction. Disguised as an old woman, she wandered to Eleusis near Athens, where she tried to immortalise the prince Demophon by holding him in sacred fire. She revealed herself as a goddess and commanded the Eleusinians to build her a temple. Zeus, alarmed by the dying earth, sent Hermes to Hades to retrieve Persephone — but the girl had eaten pomegranate seeds, binding her below. A compromise was reached: she would spend part of the year with Hades and part with Demeter. At her return each spring, the earth bloomed. This was the origin of the Eleusinian Mysteries.
