Athenian Kings
The legendary succession of early rulers of Athens from the earth-born Cecrops to the hero-king Theseus
The Meaning of Athenian Kings
The Athenian Kings form the mythological royal succession that governed Athens from its foundation to the establishment of democracy. The line begins with Cecrops, a half-serpent autochthonous king who judged the contest between Athena and Poseidon for patronage of the city. Cranaus succeeded him, followed by Amphictyon, then Erichthonius, the earth-born child raised by Athena. Pandion I, Erechtheus, and Pandion II continued the line, each associated with wars, sacrifices, and cult foundations. Aegeus, father of Theseus, received the throne after a period of division. Theseus united the scattered communities of Attica into a single state in the legendary synoecism and was credited with establishing early democratic institutions. After Theseus, kingship gradually gave way to archonship, bridging the gap between myth and the historical Athenian constitution.
