The Legend of Bucolion

Bucolion was the eldest son of King Laomedon of Troy, but he was born out of wedlock and therefore had no claim to the throne.‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍ His name derives from the Greek word for herdsman, reflecting the pastoral life he led away from the royal court. Bucolion secretly married the nymph Abarbarea, a naiad of the springs, and she bore him twin sons named Aesepus and Pedasus. Both twins went to fight at Troy and both were killed by Euryalus during the great war. Homer tells their story with particular pathos, noting how the twins were born of a nymph and raised in the countryside far from the conflict that would eventually claim them. Bucolion's story underscores the war's reach into every branch of the Trojan royal family.
