The Myth of Lysianassa

Lysianassa was one of Hesiod's fifty Nereids, and her name combines lysis (loosening, release) with ‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌anassa (queen), making her "the queen who sets free" or "royal deliverer." She personified liberation and release — freedom from storms, from shipwreck, from the dangers of the deep. In some mythological traditions, a Lysianassa appears as the mother of Busiris, the Egyptian king slain by Heracles, but the Nereid is a distinct figure. The concept of lysis — loosening, releasing — was important in Greek religious thought, connected to rituals of purification and the freeing of obligations. Lysianassa represented the sea's capacity to release those it held in peril.
