Erichthonius

🗡 heroKingἘριχθόνιος
Athens, earth-born

Earth-born king of Athens raised by Athena in secret.‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌

The Legend of Erichthonius

When Hephaestus attempted to force himself on Athena, she fought him off, and his seed fell upon the earth.‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌ From this union of craft-god and Gaia, Erichthonius was born — half human, half serpent. Athena placed the infant in a chest and gave it to the daughters of Cecrops with orders not to open it. They disobeyed, saw the serpent-child, and leapt from the Acropolis in madness. Athena raised Erichthonius herself, and he became king of Athens, founding the Panathenaic festival. His story links Athens's autochthonous identity to Poseidon's contest and the legacy of the Olympians.
