Heraclids
The descendants of Heracles who claimed the Peloponnese and established the Dorian kingdoms of Sparta, Argos, and Messenia
The Meaning of Heraclids
The Heraclids were the descendants of Heracles who, after their ancestor's death and apotheosis, sought to reclaim the Peloponnese as their rightful inheritance. Heracles had been cheated of his birthright by Hera's manipulation, and his children were persecuted by Eurystheus of Mycenae. After Eurystheus was killed in battle against Athens, the Heraclids attempted to return to the Peloponnese but were repeatedly repelled by plague and military defeat. An oracle told them to wait for the third harvest, which they initially misunderstood as three years. After further failures, they realised it meant three generations. Under the leadership of Temenus, Cresphontes, and the sons of Aristodemus, the Heraclids finally conquered the Peloponnese, dividing it into the kingdoms of Argos, Messenia, and Sparta. The historical Spartans and their kings claimed Heraclid descent.
