Penthesilea
heroPenthesilea was the Amazon queen who came to fight for Troy after Hector's death — killed by Achilles, who wept when he saw her beauty.
The Myth
After accidentally killing her sister Hippolyta, Penthesilea sought death in battle to purge her guilt. She led an Amazon army to Troy and fought with such fury that the Greeks were driven back to their ships. Achilles faced her in single combat and killed her. When he removed her helmet and saw her face, he was overcome with grief and desire — a moment the ancients called "love at death." Thersites mocked his tears; Achilles killed Thersites for his cruelty.
