Panopeus
A Phocian town whose rough-shaped stones were said to be leftovers from when the Titans made the giant Tityus.
The Story of Panopeus
Panopeus was a small town in Phocis notable for its association with several strange myths. The rough, unworked stones scattered across its landscape were explained by the local tradition that the Titans had fashioned the giant Tityus from the local clay — the leftover chunks became the town's peculiar geology. The town also hosted the border crossing between Phocis and Boeotia and featured in Pausanias's account of his travels, where he mentioned the stones explicitly and expressed scepticism at the explanation. Tityus was later punished in Tartarus for assaulting Leto, his liver gnawed by vultures as Prometheus's was by eagles.

Fun Fact
Pausanias visited Panopeus around 150 CE and noted the stones himself, observing that the locals genuinely believed them to be debris from Tityus's creation — an unusually direct record of live folk belief.
