Methone
A Macedonian coastal town where the archer Aster shot out the eye of Philip II — and mythologically associated with Ariadne.
The Story of Methone
Methone in Macedonia appeared in myth as a town sacred to Dionysus and connected to traditions of the god's arrival from the east. The wine-dark sea around it was associated with the god's favourite medium. More locally, Methone in Messenia was one of the places where the myth of Ariadne's abandonment by Theseus was localised — traditions varied on where exactly Theseus left her and where Dionysus found the weeping princess. Regardless of which Methone was meant, the site's mythological function was as a place of loss transformed into divine marriage.
