The Story of Arges

Argos was the kingdom of Danaus and his fifty daughters, who fled Egypt to escape forced marriages to their cousins, the fifty sons of Aegyptus.‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍ The city was also home to Perseus, who was born here after Zeus visited his mother Danae in a shower of gold, and to Agamemnon, the great king who led the Greeks to Troy. The goddess Hera had a particular attachment to Argos — it was one of her three beloved cities — and her great sanctuary the Heraion stood just outside the city. The mythological density of the Argolid plain is unmatched in the Greek world.
