Iphianassa
Daughter of Agamemnon mentioned by Homer, sometimes identified with Iphigenia
The Legend of Iphianassa
Iphianassa appears in the Iliad as one of the three daughters Agamemnon offers to Achilles along with a vast dowry to persuade him back into the war. She is named alongside Chrysothemis and Laodice. The question of whether Iphianassa and Iphigenia are the same person has occupied scholars since antiquity. Homer never mentions the sacrifice at Aulis, and his Iphianassa appears to be alive and well in Mycenae. Later tragedians, particularly Euripides, used the name Iphigenia for the daughter sacrificed — or nearly sacrificed — to Artemis. Some ancient commentators believed they were separate daughters, giving Agamemnon four girls rather than three. The ambiguity reflects how different poetic traditions reshaped the same family across centuries.
