The Meaning of Goddess of the Hearth

Hestia was the firstborn child of Kronos and Rhea, making her the eldest Olympian, and the last to be disgorged when Zeus freed his siblings.‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ Both Poseidon and Apollo courted her, but she swore an oath on Zeus's head to remain a virgin forever. Zeus, grateful for this act of peace (which prevented a war between the suitors), granted her the honour of receiving the first offering at every sacrifice and the first and last libation at every feast. Every Greek city maintained a public hearth sacred to Hestia, and when colonists founded a new city, they carried fire from the mother city's hearth to light the new one. She voluntarily gave her Olympian seat to Dionysus, preferring the quiet hearth to the quarrels of the gods.
