The Meaning of Goddess of the Hunt

Artemis was born on the island of Delos, moments before her twin Apollo, and she immediately helped her mother Leto through the second birth.‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌ As a young child she climbed onto Zeus's knee and asked him for eternal virginity, a silver bow, a company of nymphs, and dominion over all mountains. He granted every wish. She became the protector of young girls and wild creatures, yet she was also a fearsome hunter. When the hero Actaeon stumbled upon her bathing in a forest pool, she transformed him into a stag, and his own hounds tore him apart. She demanded the sacrifice of Agamemnon's daughter Iphigenia when he boasted he was a better hunter, though most traditions say she substituted a deer at the last moment and spirited the girl away to serve as her priestess.
