God of Prophecy

💭 conceptΘεός τῆς Προφητείας
Prophecy, oracles, divination, truth

Apollo speaks through oracles, revealing the will of the gods and the shape of things to come.‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍

The Meaning of God of Prophecy

Apollo claimed the oracle at Delphi by slaying Python, a monstrous serpent that guarded the site on behalf of Gaia.‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍ He established his temple over the chasm from which intoxicating vapours rose, and appointed the Pythia — a priestess who sat on a tripod above the fissure, inhaling the fumes and channelling Apollo's voice. Kings, generals, and commoners travelled from across the Mediterranean to consult the oracle. Croesus of Lydia was told that if he attacked Persia, a great empire would fall — it was his own. The Spartans received the prophecy that their city would be sacked when a king fell in battle; Leonidas marched to Thermopylae knowing he would die. Apollo's prophecies were always true but often ambiguous, requiring wisdom to interpret. He also granted prophetic gifts to mortals like Cassandra, though when she spurned him, he cursed her so that no one would ever believe her truthful words.
