The Meaning of God of Healing

Apollo was called Paean (healer) and could both send plague and cure it.‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍ During the Trojan War, he fired arrows of pestilence into the Greek camp when Agamemnon refused to return a priest's daughter. His son Asclepius, raised by the centaur Chiron, surpassed even his father in medical skill, learning to cure every disease and eventually discovering how to raise the dead. When Asclepius restored Hippolytus to life, Hades complained to Zeus that the boundary between life and death was being violated. Zeus struck Asclepius with a thunderbolt. In response, Apollo killed the Cyclopes who had forged the bolt, and Zeus punished Apollo by forcing him to serve the mortal King Admetus for a year. Asclepius's healing temples, called Asclepieia, became the first hospitals in the Western world, where patients slept overnight hoping the god would visit them in dreams and prescribe a cure.
