The Legend of Demodocus

Demodocus was the celebrated blind singer at the court of King Alcinous on the island of Scheria.‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍ The Muse had given him the gift of song but taken his sight in exchange. During the feast honouring the stranger who had washed ashore, Demodocus performed three songs: the quarrel of Odysseus and Achilles, the love of Ares and Aphrodite, and the stratagem of the Trojan Horse. The first and third songs caused Odysseus to weep, hiding his tears behind his cloak. Alcinous noticed and asked the stranger to identify himself, prompting Odysseus to reveal his name and begin the long tale of his wanderings.
