The Meaning of Xenia

Xenia, the sacred law of hospitality, was enforced by Zeus himself as Zeus Xenios.‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍ Paris violated it by abducting Helen from Sparta, igniting the Trojan War. The Cyclops Polyphemus violated it by devouring Odysseus's men, and Poseidon's wrath at his blinding drove the entire Odyssey. The suitors violated it at Ithaca by consuming Penelope's household for years. Conversely, the Phaeacians at Scheria offered Odysseus perfect xenia — gifts, safe passage, and respect. Circe too, after initial hostility, became a generous host. The entire Odyssey judges every society by how it treats the stranger at the door.
