Xenia
The sacred law of hospitality that governed host-guest relationships, enforced by Zeus himself as Zeus Xenios.
The Meaning of Xenia
Xenia was the sacred institution of guest-friendship that formed the ethical backbone of Greek civilization. It imposed reciprocal obligations on hosts and guests: the host must offer food, shelter, and gifts without first asking the stranger's name or business; the guest must not insult the host, overstay their welcome, or make excessive demands. Zeus Xenios — Zeus as protector of guests — enforced this law, and violating it was among the gravest sins in Greek religion. The Trojan War itself was caused by a violation of xenia: Paris, a guest of Menelaus, abducted his host's wife Helen. The Odyssey is structured around xenia — good hosts like the Phaeacians are rewarded, while the suitors who abuse Odysseus's hospitality are slaughtered. Polyphemus the Cyclops, who eats his guests, represents the ultimate perversion. Even the gods tested mortals through xenia: Zeus and Hermes visited Baucis and Philemon disguised as travellers.
Fun Fact
The entire Trojan War — ten years of slaughter — was mythologically justified as punishment for violating xenia.
