Judgement of Paris
The Trojan prince's fateful choice among three goddesses that set in motion the Trojan War
The Meaning of Judgement of Paris
The Judgement of Paris was the mythological event that precipitated the Trojan War and, by extension, the destruction of an entire civilisation. At the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, Eris (Strife), the only goddess not invited, tossed a golden apple among the guests inscribed with the words "For the Fairest." Three goddesses claimed it: Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Zeus, wisely refusing to judge, appointed the Trojan prince Paris, reputed the handsomest mortal alive, as arbiter. Each goddess offered Paris a bribe. Hera promised dominion over all Asia and Europe. Athena offered supreme martial skill and wisdom. Aphrodite promised the most beautiful woman in the world — Helen, wife of King Menelaus of Sparta. Paris chose Aphrodite and awarded her the apple. With Aphrodite's help, Paris sailed to Sparta, was received as a guest by Menelaus, and absconded with Helen while Menelaus was away at a funeral in Crete. The abduction violated the sacred laws of xenia (guest-friendship) and triggered the oath that Helen's former suitors had sworn — to defend the marriage rights of whoever won her hand. Agamemnon assembled the greatest military coalition the Greek world had ever seen, a thousand ships sailed for Troy, and the ten-year war that followed destroyed the city and decimated a generation of heroes.
