Theseus and the Amazons
The Athenian king's conflict with the warrior women that brought war to the gates of Athens itself
The Meaning of Theseus and the Amazons
The conflict between Theseus and the Amazons was one of the defining episodes in the mythological history of Athens. According to the most common version, Theseus accompanied Heracles on his ninth labour to obtain the girdle of the Amazon queen Hippolyta. During the expedition, Theseus abducted the Amazon Antiope (sometimes identified with Hippolyta herself) and brought her back to Athens as his bride. The Amazons, outraged by the abduction of their queen or princess, launched a military invasion of Attica — an event known as the Amazonomachy. The warrior women marched overland from their homeland on the southern shore of the Black Sea, crossed Thrace and Macedonia, and encamped on the Areopagus hill overlooking the Athenian Acropolis. A fierce battle ensued in which the Amazons nearly overwhelmed the Athenians. Antiope fought alongside Theseus against her own people (or, in some versions, was killed during the fighting). After a prolonged struggle, the Athenians repelled the Amazon army, and a treaty was negotiated. The myth held enormous significance for Athenian civic identity. The Amazonomachy was depicted on the Parthenon metopes, the shield of Athena Parthenos, and the painted Stoa in the Agora, placing the defeat of the Amazons alongside the Trojan War, the Gigantomachy, and the Persian Wars as foundational Athenian triumphs of civilisation over barbarism.
