The Myth of Phaeo

Phaeo was one of the Hyades, the group of nymphs who were daughters of the Titan Atlas.‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌ Along with her sisters, she was entrusted with the care of the infant Dionysus after Zeus rescued the baby from the ashes of his mother Semele and wished to hide him from the jealous Hera. The Hyades nursed young Dionysus in a cave on Mount Nysa, raising him on milk and honey until he reached maturity. In gratitude for their devoted care of his son, Zeus placed the Hyades among the stars as a cluster in the constellation Taurus. Phaeo's name has been connected to the Greek word for dusky or dim, perhaps reflecting the relative faintness of her star within the cluster. The Hyades' heliacal rising in late autumn signalled the onset of the rainy season to Greek farmers and sailors, making them among the most practically important stars in the ancient sky.
