The Myth of Ianthe

Ianthe was a daughter of Oceanus and Tethys whose name means "violet flower" in Greek.‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌ Hesiod names her among the Oceanids in his catalogue within the Theogony, and she was said to be one of the companions of Persephone when the maiden goddess was gathering flowers in the meadow before Hades seized her. This detail from the Homeric Hymn to Demeter places Ianthe at the very moment that triggered the seasons themselves. She embodies the fleeting beauty of wildflowers that bloom in spring and vanish with summer's heat, a fitting companion for the goddess of that very cycle.
