Thyene
One of the Hyades nymphs whose name connects to the ecstatic worship of Dionysus whom she nursed
The Myth of Thyene
Thyene was one of the Hyades, the nymph-daughters of Atlas who raised the infant Dionysus on Mount Nysa. Her name is closely connected to the Greek word thyein, meaning to rage or to be in a Bacchic frenzy, linking her directly to the ecstatic worship of the god she nursed. In some traditions, the name Thyone was also given to Semele after Dionysus rescued his mother from the underworld and she was deified. This overlap suggests a deep mythological connection between the nursing of Dionysus and the cult practices that surrounded his worship. Thyene and her sisters were catasterised by Zeus as the Hyades star cluster in gratitude for protecting his infant son. The rainy-season association of the Hyades made them vital navigational and agricultural markers, with sailors and farmers alike tracking their rising and setting to plan voyages and planting.
