The Myth

Peneus ruled the great river of Thessaly that carved the Vale of Tempe between Mount Olympus and Mount Ossa. When Apollo pursued his daughter Daphne, it was Peneus who answered her desperate prayer by transforming her into a laurel tree. The god grieved for his daughter's lost human form even as Apollo adopted the laurel as his sacred emblem.
