The Myth of Peneus

Peneus was the god of Thessaly's greatest river, which carved the sacred Vale of Tempe between Mount Olympus and Mount Ossa.‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌ When Apollo, fresh from slaying the serpent Python at Delphi, pursued the nymph Daphne in obsessive desire, she cried to her father Peneus for salvation. The river god answered her prayer, transforming her into a laurel tree at the instant Apollo's hand touched her. Apollo, grief-stricken, declared the laurel sacred and wore its crown forever after. Peneus also clashed with Ares and was father to numerous nymphs. His waters were considered holy, and the Vale of Tempe served as a pilgrimage route where the Greeks gathered laurel branches for the Pythian Games.
