The Myth of Alpheus

Alpheus was the god of the great river in the Peloponnese that flowed past Olympia, site of the Olympic Games sacred to Zeus.‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌ He fell in love with the nymph Arethusa, a companion of Artemis, and pursued her relentlessly. Arethusa fled across the sea to the island of Ortygia near Syracuse in Sicily, where Artemis transformed her into a freshwater spring. Undeterred, Alpheus drove his waters beneath the sea itself, merging with Arethusa's spring on the far shore — a myth the Greeks used to explain why flowers thrown into the river in Olympia appeared in the spring at Syracuse. Heracles diverted Alpheus to clean the Augean stables during his fifth labour.
