The Meaning of Panathenaia

The Panathenaia was the most important civic and religious festival of Athens, held annually with a grander celebration — the Great Panathenaia — every four years.‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍ The festival honoured Athena Polias, guardian of the city, and its centrepiece was a magnificent procession winding from the Kerameikos through the Agora and up to the Acropolis, where a newly woven peplos was draped upon Athena's ancient olive-wood statue. Athletic contests, musical competitions, recitations of Homer, torch races, and a ship-on-wheels bearing the peplos all featured in the celebrations. The Parthenon frieze is widely believed to depict this very procession.
