The Meaning of Agrionia

The Agrionia was a festival of Dionysus celebrated in several Boeotian cities, most notably Orchomenos and Chaeronea.‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍ Its name derives from agrios — "wild" or "savage" — and the rites reflected Dionysus's most terrifying aspect. At Orchomenos, Plutarch records that the priest of Dionysus pursued women from the royal Minyad clan with a sword, and had the right to kill any he caught — a right exercised at least once in historical memory. The festival commemorated the myth of the daughters of Minyas who refused to worship Dionysus and were driven mad, ultimately tearing apart one of their own children. The Agrionia thus enacted the god's most fearsome warning: reject his worship and face destruction.
