Hyacinthia
Three-day Spartan festival mourning and celebrating Hyacinthus at Amyclae
The Meaning of Hyacinthia
The Hyacinthia was a three-day festival held at the sanctuary of Apollo at Amyclae near Sparta, commemorating the myth of Hyacinthus — the beautiful youth accidentally killed by Apollo with a discus. The first day was marked by mourning: no wreaths were worn, no hymns sung, and only sombre meals were taken. The second and third days transformed into joyous celebration with choral performances, horse races, sacrifices, and a great procession. This structure — grief followed by celebration — reflected the Greek understanding of death and renewal, mirroring agricultural cycles of dormancy and growth. Spartan girls wove a new chiton for Apollo's statue during the festival.
