The Myth of Metaneira

Metaneira was the queen of Eleusis, wife of King Celeus.‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌ When Demeter wandered the earth in grief searching for her abducted daughter Persephone, she disguised herself as an old woman and was taken in by Metaneira's household. In gratitude, Demeter agreed to nurse Metaneira's infant son Demophon, whom she was secretly making immortal by bathing him in fire at night. Metaneira discovered this ritual and cried out in horror, breaking the process and denying her son immortality. Despite this failure, Demeter rewarded the family of Eleusis by teaching the Eleusinian Mysteries to Triptolemus, Metaneira's other son — the sacred rites that promised initiates a blessed afterlife.

Fun Fact

Metaneira's accidental interruption of Demeter's fire ritual is one of mythology's key "almost immortal" stories — her son came within a single panicked cry of becoming a god.
