Eleusis
placeEleusis was a sacred city near Athens, home to the Eleusinian Mysteries — the most important secret religious rites in the ancient Greek world.
The Myth
When Demeter wandered the earth searching for Persephone, she came to Eleusis disguised as an old woman. The royal family took her in. She revealed her divinity and commanded a temple be built. There she established the Mysteries — secret rites that promised initiates a blessed afterlife. For nearly two thousand years people came to be initiated. The penalty for revealing the secrets was death, and the rites were so well guarded that their core content remains unknown to this day.
