Judgment of Paris

concept
Κρίσις τοῦ Πάριδος
fate

The beauty contest between Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite judged by Paris of Troy that caused the Trojan War.

The Myth

A teenager on a hillside was asked to judge which goddess was most beautiful — and his answer destroyed a civilization. Eris threw a golden apple inscribed "for the fairest" at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite each claimed it. Zeus refused to judge and sent them to Paris on Mount Ida. Hera offered power over Asia. Athena offered wisdom and victory in war. Aphrodite offered the most beautiful woman alive — Helen of Sparta. Paris chose Aphrodite. This made Hera and Athena permanent enemies of Troy. Paris sailed to Sparta, took Helen, and the thousand ships followed. The entire war — Achilles, Hector, the wooden horse, the burning city — traces back to one bribed verdict on a hillside.
