The Meaning of Niobe's Punishment

Niobe was the queen of Thebes, wife of Amphion, and daughter of Tantalus.‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍ She was blessed with extraordinary beauty, royal lineage, and — most fatefully — fourteen children: seven sons and seven daughters, all healthy and accomplished. This abundance led Niobe to a catastrophic act of hubris. During a festival in honour of the Titaness Leto, mother of Apollo and Artemis, Niobe publicly declared herself superior to the goddess. Why, she asked, should Thebes worship a deity with only two children when Niobe herself had fourteen? She commanded the citizens to cease their sacrifices and worship her instead. Leto heard the insult and called upon her divine children to avenge her honour. Apollo and Artemis descended upon Thebes with their bows. Apollo, the far-striker, killed Niobe's seven sons one by one as they exercised on the plain before the city — some while riding, some while wrestling, each felled by a silver arrow. Artemis then struck down the seven daughters, who fell where they stood beside their brothers' bodies. Amphion, mad with grief, killed himself (or was killed by Apollo). Niobe, surrounded by the corpses of all her children, wept until the gods transformed her into a rock on Mount Sipylus in Lydia, from which a stream eternally flows — her unending tears. The myth served as one of the most powerful warnings against hybris in the Greek tradition: no mortal prosperity is so great that it cannot be destroyed in a single day.
